Goa court theft case cracked, criminal lawyer arrested for the offence

Panaji: Goa Police cracked down the case of theft in the evidence room of the court in Panaji with the arrest of the criminal lawyer for his involvement in the offence.

Superintendent of Police (North) Nidhin Valsan told reporters on Thursday evening that the police have arrested Mujahiddin Shaikh, a lawyer by profession from Valpoi town, for stealing cash and gold from the evidence room of the court.

The incident had happened on Wednesday and police managed to arrest the accused within 24 hours of the incident.

Valsan said that the accused, who is lawyer by profession, had arrived in the court in his uniform on Tuesday evening at 5 pm and had hidden himself in the toilet.

“When all the staff of the court left. He stole cash and gold from the room and fled from the backside of the building,” the SP said adding that the exact amount of cash and gold stolen is yet to be ascertained.

Valsan said that after the theft, the accused tried to mislead the police by going towards South Goa and then taking a turn to go to his town of Valpoi, located 60 kms away from Panaji.

The SP said that police had formed eight teams including that of Crime Branch who finally cracked down the case.

Valsan said that the accused was involved earlier in the case of rioting and also fatal accident case.
