GMFP approaches Suresh Prabhu, Ravi Shankar Prasad for re-starting mining in Goa

Panaji: The Goa Mining People’s Front (GMPF) today called on Group of Ministers-Union Minister for Commerce Suresh Prabhu and Union Minister for Law Ravi Shankar Prasad with a demand to expedite process for resumption of iron ore mining activities in the State, which are shut since March 16.

 The delegation led by union leader Puti Gaonkar pressed for immediate amendment to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act (MMDR) to ensure that mining leases life is extended upto 2037.

In a press statement issued, Gaonkar said that Minister Suresh Prabhu has assured to deploy one of his officer to monitor the process and get clear the file with regards to the amendment to the Act, currently pending before Attorney General.

He said that Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has also assured necessary steps to get file cleared at the earliest as the State and Centre government are committed to resolve the mining issue in Goa.
