Colvale: Four officials attached to Central Jail Colvale were suspended on Friday after videos were carried on social media of the inmates making effigy of Ravan and burning it on the eve of Dussehra.
Inspector General of Prisons Omvir Singh on Friday issued suspension orders to Assistant Superintendent Chandrakant Harijan, Jailors Mahesh Fadte and Anil Gaonkar and Assistant Jailor Ramnath Gaude attached to Central Jail at Colvale for dereliction of duties.
Sources stated that the action was initiated after several videos surfaced on the social media showing inmates creating effigy of Ravan and burning it using firecrackers.
“The inquiry would be initiated as how mobile phones were allowed in the jail premises. The officials will also have to answer how inmates were allowed to make the effigy without taking any prior permission,” a senior jail official said.
He said that the issue is about safety and security of the jail. “All the officers who are suspended are held primarily responsible for this act and hence are placed under suspension, pending inquiry,” he added.
