Fathers in Congress, Sons in BJP: Goa’s new trend?  – by Deepali Desai

Ravi Naik is one of the most senior leaders in Goa Congress, a seasoned politician and a former Chief Minister of the state. Ideally, the father’s legacy is expected to be taken forward by their children in politics but in Goa, it is only partially true. After Vishwajit Rane, now Naik brothers Roy and Ritesh have joined Bhartiya Janata Party. Another Achievement for BJP leaders.

GOA CONGRESS FURTHER SHRINKS

It’s worth noting that when senior leaders like Rane and Naik couldn’t convince their children to stay in the party, how else would one be drawn to the Congress, the party that has seen purge recently. First failing to form the Government despite winning more seats than BJP and then further losing 10 of its MLAs to the ruling party including its then sitting Leader of Opposition. The Congress party has failed its own in the past few years.

While writing this, I am particularly dismayed. Because, we must realise, that for a successful democracy to function, opposition’s role is vital. If there is no opposition, there is no one to highlight the real problems on-ground. The poorest of the poor suffer and many lose their voice in the process. In Goa, for example, there are several issues- right from bad roads, to lack of jobs, rising crime rates to concerns over drugs being peddled into the state, casinos, mining and the list go on.

The recent economic crisis and failing to combat COVID situation, deaths owning to the virus in the state is itself an eye-opener of sorts. Sadly, opposition’s voice has weakened in the state. Sometimes, it is also their inconsistency to pursue matters. Again, what else is expected when there is shrink in opposition benches in the Assembly.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR CONGRESS?

The party is currently led by Girish Chodankar. While being at the helm, he has lost many of his party MLAs to the ruling BJP. The current blow with Naik sons is also one to count. The loss in numbers has created a wide gap.

So I ask as an unbiased citizen

QUESTIONS TO CONGRESS PARTY

What are the steps being taken by the grand old party to compensate the recent loss including 10 MLAs who left Congress?

Are the senior leaders, perhaps, working in silos even trying to look for young, fresh faces?

Will Congress Party senior leadership make no efforts to try and stop their own kin from joining BJP?

I also want to ask, when likes of Ravi Naik says his sons are mature enough to take their own political decisions, in return are they okay with weakening the Congress party?

  1. These two have had lost elections in the past, more purge like these individuals is better for the Congress. It will draw fresh blood to it.
