Porvorim: Goa Legislative Assembly on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and two companies who have produced vaccine for the successful control of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a three hour long discussion, the House, cutting across the party lines congratulated the PM and the companies for successful control over COVID-19 pandemic.

The congratulatory motion was moved by Subhash Shirodkar (BJP) and Rohan Khaunte (Independent) on the floor of the House during the second day of the Session on Wednesday.

The motion saw verbal dual between Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai and the members from ruling benches when former alleged that the motion seeks to instill “false sense of confidence about the vaccine.”

The opposition benches including Sardesai and Khaunte also alleged that there was shortage of oxygen during the pandemic time. State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane rubbished the allegation.

Speaking on the motion, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the world is looking at India and specially the PM for the way pandemic situation was handled by the country.

He said that though we lost some of the people to the disease, the country and Goa, managed to ensure recovery of majority of the people who were infected with COVID-19 virus.

State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said that the government has taken every step that is required to have been taken to counter the virus.

He pointed out that state-run Goa Medical College and Hospital provided free treatment to the patients infected with the virus, which also included some VVIPs.

Moving the motion on the floor of the House, khaunte, who is in the opposition benches, accused State government of delayed response, initially, when outbreak happened.

He suggested that during vaccination drive, the state government should draw a proper strategy and not repeat the mistakes of the past.

Khaunte also recommended that all the 40 MLAs of Goa Assembly should get themselves inoculated to bring in sense of confidence amongst the people.

Sardesai stirred hornet’s nest when he laid scathing attack on BJP-led government claiming that the motion was moved to bring in “false sense of confidence” about the vaccine.

He also repeated the demand by Khaunte that the leaders should take the vaccine first before administering it to people.
