Panaji: Congress party today demanded that Sports Minister Manohar Azgoankar should step down from the post as the State is likely to miss out hosting National Games 2018 in November, for failing to put in place the required infrastructure.

During the recent meeting held in New Delhi, the State delegation led by Sports Minister has urged Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) executive council to postpone the 36th edition of National Games from November to February, next year. The State has informed about lack of infrastructure requirement.

Addressing press conference, Congress spokesperson Sankalp Amonkar stated that Goa was selected as host for 36th National games way back in 2014, however, till date it has not managed to put in place the required infrastructure for the games.

“The State has become a laughing stock at the national platform. We have miserably failed to create the required infrastructure and hence have sought postponement of games to February 2019. IOA is also very upset with State government’s carless attitude,” Amonkar said.

Amonkar has demanded that either Chief Minister should sack Manohar Azgaonkar or he himself should step down accepting the moral responsibility of the failure. “We demand that government should ensure that National Games are neither cancelled nor postponed,” he stated.

“Goans should not be missed out from golden opportunity to show case their talent in their own land,” he said.
