Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday inaugurated a Rs 201-crore raw water conveyance project, stating that the infrastructure has been designed to meet the state’s water requirements for the next 25 to 30 years.
The project comprises the Amthane Pump House and 1,200 mm and 1,000 mm ductile iron (DI) pipelines from Amthane to Cunchelim in North Goa, creating a dedicated 150 MLD (million litres per day) raw water conveyance system.
According to an official statement, the system will ensure an uninterrupted supply of raw water to water treatment plants at Assonora (100 MLD), Porvorim (15 MLD), Pilerne (30 MLD), and Assagao (5 MLD).
Speaking after commissioning the project, Sawant said the infrastructure would strengthen long-term water security in the state and benefit residents of Mapusa, Siolim, Porvorim, Bicholim, and adjoining areas in North Goa.
The Chief Minister said the project reflects the government’s vision of planning 25 to 30 years ahead to make Goa self-reliant in water security.
He said the government is also focusing on water conservation measures, including the construction of check dams, promotion of rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, rejuvenation of wells, and registration of borewells.
Sawant appealed to citizens to actively participate in water conservation efforts to ensure the sustainable management of the state’s water resources.
