Margao: Twenty-four fishermen were rescued after two fishing canoes capsized in separate incidents off South Goa’s Colva and Benaulim beaches on Tuesday amid rough sea conditions, state-run lifesaving agency Drishti Marine said.
According to a statement issued by Drishti Marine, the first incident took place off Colva Beach on Tuesday afternoon when a fishing canoe carrying 15 fishermen overturned in rough seas.
The agency immediately deployed its lifesavers and jet ski operators, who reached the fishermen with rescue equipment and brought all 15 safely to shore, it said.
Around the same time, another fishing canoe carrying nine fishermen capsized off nearby Benaulim Beach.
Drishti Marine said its lifesavers and jet ski operators rescued the fishermen and ensured they reached safety. No injuries were reported in either incident.
The agency said sea conditions along Goa’s coastline remain hazardous during the ongoing monsoon season due to rough waters and strong winds.
Swimming is prohibited on Goa’s beaches during the monsoon, it said.
Drishti Marine said it has deployed more than 480 trained lifesavers and beach marshals across the state’s major beaches, waterfalls, and four inland water bodies to respond to emergencies during the season.
