Panaji: Congress candidate Atanasio Monserratte on Friday filed his nomination for the upcoming by-poll in Panaji Assembly constituency.

Monserratte, accompanied by Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar and other leaders, submitted his nomination papers to the District Returning officer in Panaji.

The former State Minister is the first candidate to file the nomination for Panaji by-election, which are scheduled to be held on May 19.

Talking to reporters, Kavlekar said that Congress party will wrestle Panaji seat increasing its tally in the House. “People are supporting Congress party in a big way and you will see the impact even in the Panaji by-poll,” he said.

The polls in Panaji assembly segment are necessitated after the death of BJP leader and then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on March 17, 2019.

Monserratte, who was vice president of Goa Forward Party, had resigned from the party to join Congress earlier this month.

BJP is yet to announce its candidate in Panaji constituency while it has shortlisted the names of Utpal, son of late Manohar Parrikar and former MLA Siddharth Kunkolienkar.
