Panaji: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Amit Palekar on Friday broke his indefinite hunger strike after State government ordered the demolition of controversial structure at Old Goa.

AAP tweeted a video on Friday showing Palekar ending his five day long indefinite fast infront of Basilica of Bom Jesus Church at Old Goa. Palekar had began protest demanding demolition of a controversial structure, which was granted permission by State Town and Country Planning Department despite being in UNESCO protected world heritage site of Old Goa.

On December 02, Deputy Town Planner S P Surlakar had ordered Old Goa panchayat to revoke Technical Clearance granted for the controversial structure.

Town and Country Planning Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar had told mediapersons that the permission granted to the structure by Town and Country Planning Department has been revoked.

On Friday evening, AAP’s Goa unit tweeted “Big Victory for Goans!! @AmitPalekar10 breaks his fast after @BJP4Goa Govt accepts his demand and issues demolition order of the illegal construction.”

Palekar’s five year old daughter gave lemon water to her father to break the fast.

Reacting to the incident, AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal tweeted “Wow! Wow! Wow! Congrats Amit! Congrats Goa! So proud of u Amit. Whole Goa is proud of u.”

Earlier during the day, chief minister Pramod Sawant had told reporters that state government has initiated action against the structure as per the law. “The action would be taken as per the law. I don’t want to comment on anyone who wants to take political mileage out of the issue,” he said.
