78.70 per cent voting reported in Goa Panchayat polls

Panaji: Total 78.70 per cent voting was reported for the 186 village panchayats in the state during the polling process that was held on Wednesday.

A senior State Election Commission officer told reporters that 78.70 per cent voters exercised their right during the day. The elections were held for the 1464 wards of 186 village panchayats in the state.

He said that total 6,26,496 voters voted on Wednesday.81.45 per cent voting was recorded in North Goa while 76.13 per cent in South Goa.

Sattari taluka in North Goa recorded highest, that is 89.30 per cent voting while the lowest voting was recorded in Salcette taluka of South Goa.

Navelim village panchayat in Bicholim taluka recorded highest 93.33 percent voting while Sarzora village panchayat in South Goa recorded 60 per cent voting.

He said that the election in one of the ward in the Calangute Panchayat in North Goa had to be postponed for Thursday after a candidate complained about mismatch between his name and the symbol allotted.

The election in this ward would be held from 8 a.m till 5 pm on Thursday.

The election officer said that the entire election process was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported.
