Panaji: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has appointed senior Congress leader Sunil Kawthankar as the Working President of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC).

AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal, in an order issued on Sunday, appointed Kawthankar as the Working President of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect.

The 40-year-old leader was serving as the Vice President of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee before being elevated to the new post.

The appointment comes at a time when Venugopal has concluded his two-day visit to the coastal state, during which he held a series of meetings with party leaders.

Kawthankar will be the third Working President of the party. The AICC has already appointed MLAs Carlos Ferreira and Altone D’Costa as Working Presidents.

The GPCC recently witnessed a change in leadership, with Central Working Committee member Girish Chodankar taking over as the President of the state unit.

He replaced Amit Patkar, who served in the post for four-and-a-half years.

Kawthankar was the President of the NSUI Goa unit in the past before being elevated to the Pradesh Congress Committee.
