Seven historical sites including two forts notified as protected monuments

Panaji: Goa government has declared seven historically important places including the residence of freedom fighter Deepaji Rane as protected monuments.

In a notification issued on Thursday, the  State Archives department has identified seven monuments in the state as protected sites.

The monuments include Nanus Fort in Sattari taluka from where freedom fighter Deepaji Rane began his revolt against the Portuguese rule in the year 1852.

The residence of freedom fighter Deepaji Rane located at Kumbharkhan in Sattari taluka is also notified as protected monument under Goa Ancient Monuments and Archeological sites and Remains Act, 1978.

Betul Fort in South Goa’s Quepem taluka which was built on the orders of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century is also declared as a protected monument in the same notification.

The notification has also notified the Rock Engraving at Mauxi in Sattari taluka, Stone circle at Baddem Cotigao in South Goa, Soliye Temple at Cola in Canacona and Tank of Shree Vazreshwar Temple at Shree Shantadurga Ballikarin Saunsthan in South as protected monuments.
