Panjim: A group of six daring cyclists pedaled their way from Mumbai to Goa on three tandem cycles, conquering distance and disability in a remarkable journey that took 40 hours, so as to be part of the much awaited International Purple Fest- Goa 2024.
Upon arrival on Sunday morning at DB Grounds, Campal Panaji, they were met with warm cheers and fragrant bouquets by Shri Subhash Phal Dessai, Minister for Social Welfare, and Shri Guruprasad Pawaskar, Goa State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities.
Minister for Social Welfare, Shri Subhash Phal Dessai said, “I’m very excited to see our young ‘Happy Humans’ arrive in Goa on tandem cycles; it’s a very difficult task, and in fact, it’s an event that is already complete. They’ve completed this task with an average speed of 20-25 km/hr, and is a noble cause that they have come in Goa.” He welcomed the cyclists for International Purple Fest- Goa 2024 and commended their feat.
This courageous group defied tandem cycle limits and took on a challenging but rewarding task. Their constant passion and determination pushed them over miles, battling tiredness and overloading their physical limits. Their achievement not only demonstrates their own strength, but also highlights the power of inclusivity and the unbreakable human spirit.
“Every ride is a crazy experience. It’s a roller coaster of emotions, frustrations, struggles, and obstacles. And every struggle reminds me that every day brings minor challenges. But it doesn’t mean you have to label every problem. You simply have to overcome it or get out of it. So disability is also just one of the challenges. You don’t need to label it. Labelling persons with disabilities as being incapacitated isn’t the right thing. It is a challenge no doubt, but we have to overcome it, let go, and rejoice,” says cyclist Nupur Pittie.
Their participation in Purple Fest recognises the cyclists’ efforts to raise awareness about disabilities and inspire others to pursue their aspirations despite hurdles.
These six cyclists tell a story of resilience, camaraderie, and unwavering human spirit by riding across from Mumbai, one pedal stroke at a time.
