Margao: Margao plunged into a shock when two robbers on Wednesday morning stabbed jewellery shop owner Swapnil Walke on a busy street of the city, when he resisted their robbery attempt. Walked died at Hospicio Hospital due to stabbing wounds and excessive bleeding.
The incident sent shock waves with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant tweeting expressing his sympathies with the family of the victim.
“Shocked by the tragic incident at the jewellery outlet in Margao today. I have spoken to DGP and SP South Goa, and asked them to investigate the incident and arrest the culprits at the earliest. We will ensure that stern action is taken and the guilty are brought to justice,” he tweeted.
“My deepest sympathies are with the family of the victim in this difficult time,” he added.
A video clip about the incident which has gone viral shows two assailants, one wearing helmet, stabbing Walke in front of the public. The victim did not let the assailants go but both of them are seen overpowering him.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai tweeted “Daylight #murder in an attempted dacoity in commercial capital of Goa indicates clear collapse of law and order. Jewellers perceived to have cash and gold are soft targets and @GovtofGoa must provide special security, do patrolling and illumination to check crime which will see spurt now.”
