Panaji:Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday inaugurated the sixth edition of Ironman 70.3 Goa at Miramar beach here, with more than 2,000 triathletes from 30 countries participating in the international endurance sporting event.
Director General of Police Alok Kumar was among the senior officials present at the inauguration.
The participants are taking on a challenging course comprising a 1.9-km open-water swim, a 90-km cycling leg and a 21.1-km run, testing their endurance, fitness and determination.
Congratulating the participants, Sawant wished them success and assured the organisers of the state government’s continued support for hosting the international sporting event in Goa.
“Whatever support is required for such an event, we will extend it. This type of event promotes Goa as a sports destination. I congratulate all the participants and the organisers,” he said.
Pointing out that the event was being hosted in Goa for the sixth consecutive edition, the chief minister said the government would continue to extend its support in the coming years.
“It is a proud moment for me as Chief Minister to come here and inaugurate this event. I promise that I will be here to inaugurate it next year as well. Whatever support you require, we will provide,” Sawant said.
The event brings together athletes from different countries to compete in three demanding disciplines, providing Goa an opportunity to showcase its potential as an international destination for sporting events.
The participation of over 2,000 athletes from 30 countries also highlights the international reach of the event and its role in promoting sports tourism in the coastal state.
Goa, traditionally known for its beaches and leisure tourism, has been seeking to expand its tourism offerings by attracting sporting events and other international gatherings.
The state government’s continued support for Ironman 70.3 Goa is aimed at strengthening its position as a destination for endurance sports and providing an international platform for athletes to compete, Sawant said.
