India Coast Guard rescues medically distressed passenger off Goa coast

Panaji: The Indian Coast Guard on Monday evacuated a Maxican national who was in a distress off Goa coast on the passenger vessel Celebrity Millennium, a senior official said.

The Indian Coast Guard spokesman said that in a remarkable skill, dedication and collaborative efforts, a medical evacuation at Sea was successfully executed by the ICG Ship C-158, ensuring the safety and well-being of a Maxican national Fernando Cruz Mendez (53).

He said that a message was received from a passenger vessel Celebrity Millennium facing a medical emergency far from land in Sea at 19.25 hrs on February 19 , around 40 kms inside Sea.

The spokesman said that the message conveyed that a passenger was suffering from a heart attack. “The vessels last port call was Mormugao and was proceeding towards Mumbai,” he said.

He said that the Coast Guard Headquarters at Goa, immediately diverted ICGS C- 158 which was on area patrol to render assistance to patient onboard the passenger ship.

“The ICGS C-158 reached alongside vessel at 21.30 hrs for evacuation of patient. At about 21.40 hrs, the ICGS C-158 casted off from MV Celebrity Millennium along with the patient, his wife and a medical attendant and entered towards Mormugao harbour at 23.30 hrs and handed over the patient to ambulance provided by Agent at Mormugao Port for further medical management,” he said.
