Governor dissolved Goa Legislative assembly

Panaji: Hours after chief minister Pramod Sawant tendered his resignation to pave way for formation of new government, Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai on Saturday evening dissolved Goa Legislative Assembly with immediate effect.

Sawant had submitted his resignation on Saturday afternoon to the Governor after his party gained majority in the recently held election. Governor had appointed Sawant as a caretaker chief minister till new government is sworn in.

On Saturday evening, Governor issued the Order dissolving the State Legislative Assembly with immediate effect.

“General election has been held for the purpose of constituting a new Legislative Assembly for the State of Goa,” the order signed by the Governor reads.

The Governor has also pointed out in the Order that the Election Commission of India has published the constitution of new legislative assembly for Goa. “It is deemed expedient to dissolve the present Legislative Assembly of the State of Goa,” the order reads adding that the term of present legislative assembly of Goa will expire on March 15, 2022.

Therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (b) of clause (2) of Article 174 of the Constitition of India, I P S Sreedharan Pillai, Governor of Goa, hereby dissolve the present legislative assembly of the state of Goa with immediate effect.
