Panaji: Goa chief minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Saturday urged the citizens to encourage ‘vocal for local’ initiative during their Diwali purchases.

Sawant said that he has himself put up AkashKandil made up of coconut tree leaves at his official residence in Panaji, which was gifted to him by school students from remote village of Loliem in Canacona Taluka of South Goa.

The chief minister was addressing government servants and panchayat members across Goa, virtually, as a part of review of `Swayampurna Goa’ initiative of the state government.

Referring to the Vocal for Local initiative, Sawant appealed citizens to buy items prepared by locals during their Diwali purchases. He said that Diwali should be an occasion to promote the local businesses.

“It may be akashkandil or eatables or even flowers, always prefer to buy those which are made locally. This way you will help to promote Vocal for Local initiative,” he said.

He said that the children from special schools (schools catering to differently abled) put up stalls at various places to sell the stuff that they have created for Diwali.

“Do buy those stuff, even if its little costly, as you will be encouraging them,” the chief minister said.
