Fatorda: The Goa Forward Party (GFP) on Sunday urged people to refrain from speculation over reports of a possible merger or alliance with the Congress, saying it remained committed to bringing together “like-minded secular forces” for a united political alternative in Goa.
The party, led by former deputy chief minister Vijai Sardesai, said its position remained clear and reiterated its “Goa First” stand.
“The Goa Forward Party’s position remains clear: Goa First, and a united, secular alternative for the people of Goa,” the party said in a post on X.
The GFP said it was committed to bringing together like-minded secular forces to provide what it described as a “credible, inclusive, and people-centred alternative” to the people of Goa.
“Unity in the larger interest of Goa is not only our priority, it is our responsibility,” the party said.
The statement came amid reports and speculation about the GFP’s possible merger or alliance with the Congress ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections.
“Until the Party officially communicates otherwise, we request that any speculation as is on presently be set aside,” the GFP said.
The development comes amid efforts by opposition parties in Goa to work out electoral arrangements ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.
The GFP and Congress have been political allies in the past, while the Sardesai-led party is also part of the recently announced “Goa First” alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
