Panaji: The family members of MGP leader Prakash Naik who died due to bullet wounds have refused to take over his body demanding immediate arrest of the people forcing him to take this extreme step.

Naik, who had contested 2017 Goa Legislative Assembly election on MGP ticket from St Cruz Assembly constituency, had committed suicide on Friday at his residence at Merces village.

Naik’s sister, Sarita Goverkar, addressing a press conference, said that two people – Wilson Godinho and Tahir (full name not known), named by the deceased through whatsapp messages, before killing himself, should be arrested by police.

Godinho is a kin of a cabinet minister in Pramod Sawant-led government.

The family members have also demanded that the investigation of the case should be handed over to Crime Branch, from Old Goa Police who are currently probing it.

Police have registered unnatural death in connection with the incident.

Govekar said that her brother was forced to take the extreme step. “We will not accept the body till both the persons named in the message are arrested,” she said.

Naik’s brother, Vinay said that there is suspicion around the investigation conducted in the case. “Police have not taken statement of the persons named in the message but instead have been summoning the well wishers,” he said.

He suspected that the entire case may be of a murder as the gun was on his chest when he was found in a pool of blood in his bedroom.

A senior police officer said that the investigation is going on in right direction in the case. “We are probing all the angles. The forensic team has also collected some samples from the spot on Friday,” he said.

The officer said that case of unnatural death has been registered in this connection.
