Panjim – All India Congress Committee (AICC) Goa desk in charge Dinesh Rao on Saturday said that India is going through a political and social crises and asked the party rank and file to lead a movement to rebuild the country, at an event to pay tributes to the Father of our Nation Mahatma Gandhi and Former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at the Congress House on Saturday morning.

Flanked by PCC president Girish Chodankar, Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha and other Congress party functionaries, Dinesh Rao said, “India is going through a political and social crises. It is the duty of the Congress Party to lead a movement to rebuild this Country together. Let us take inspiration from Gandhi and Shastri and bring the people together. They both lived by example.

If Mahatma Gandhi was alive today, he would have probably gone on another hunger strike after looking at the state of affairs. We have inherited this legacy and it is our duty to keep this country united to fight those powers that are dividing us with violence. Violence is not what our country wants today” Dinesh Rao said.

Pradesh Congress President Girish Chodankar hit out at the BJP government for destroying the truth and running the government based on falsehood. “This government has destroyed the truth and is running on falsehood. Mahatma Gandhi stood for non violence. Today we have violence all over. The farmers are on the road, not getting justice because the government of the day wants to support their industrialist friends. Our border security is compromised. Our country is in danger. I request all of you to follow the path of truth and rise up to build this country. Let us not abandon the way of truth.”

Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat said, “Mahatma Gandhi united the people in the fight for freedom. In spite of people mocking him, belittling his efforts and some even deserting him, he continued his efforts which paid off. Similarly, the Congress party should march ahead – not depending on any leaders who walk in and out. The people know what good the Congress party has done for this country. All we have to do now is remind them.”

Asking party leaders and workers to sit across and table and come together to fight the ruling dispensation, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha said, “It is high time the party leaders and workers sit across the table, sort out any differences if any, make a plan and hit the ground running at the earliest. Let us all take an oath today to bring back the long lost glory of the Congress Party.

Other leaders who spoke include former Vice President M K Shaikh, Panaji Block Congress President Joel Andrade, former MLA Victor Gonsalves, Rudolf Fernandes, Mahadev Khandekar, Shambhu Bandekar and Maria Varella and recalled various contributions of both leaders.
