Panaji: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services in compliance with advisories issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has reiterated strict enforcement of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, Transport of Animals Rule 1978, and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules, 2001.
The public is informed that transportation of animals by rail and road shall be carried out only in accordance with Rule 96 of the Transport of Animals (Amendment) Rules, 2001 and other applicable provisions of the Transport of Animals Rules, 1978, as amended from time to time. Certificates for transportation of animals are issued only by authorised officials of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services.
The advisory further states that the illegal transportation and slaughter of animals is a punishable offense. Slaughter of animals is permitted only in licensed slaughter houses and subject to Veterinary certification. Slaughter of cows, pregnant animals, young animals below three months of age, and camels is prohibited under law.
Citizens are requested to cooperate with authorities and report any instances of animal cruelty, illegal transportation, or unlawful slaughter to the nearest Police Station or Competent Authority.
