Panaji: The iconic Deccan Odyssey luxury train arrived in Goa on Thursday carrying 29 international travellers as part of its Maharashtra Splendour journey, highlighting the coastal state’s growing focus on luxury and experiential tourism.
The day-long itinerary showcased Goa’s heritage, culture, cuisine, spice traditions and coastline to the travellers aboard the luxury train.
The Deccan Odyssey’s Maharashtra Splendour journey travels through several significant cultural, heritage and natural destinations across western and central India, with Goa forming an important experiential stop along the route.
Goa Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte said the inclusion of Goa in the Deccan Odyssey journey provides an opportunity to introduce discerning travellers to the various dimensions of the state.
“Goa is much more than its beaches, and this itinerary brings together our heritage, architecture, cuisine, hinterland and coastline within a single experience. Luxury rail tourism also aligns with our approach of attracting high-value travellers and encouraging them to explore Goa beyond conventional circuits,” Khaunte said.
He said the opportunity was not only to bring visitors to Goa but also to encourage them to stay longer and explore its heritage, culture, wellness, nature and local communities.
Goa Tourism Director Kedar A. Naik said the Deccan Odyssey offers a distinctive way of experiencing Goa by combining luxury travel with immersive local experiences.
“From our traditions to Goan cuisine and the coastline, the itinerary gives travellers a glimpse of the diversity that exists within the state. Premium travel experiences such as these complement Goa’s efforts to broaden its tourism portfolio and introduce travellers to its cultural, heritage and experiential offerings,” he said.
Deepak Lotlikar, CEO of Travelsmith, said luxury train experiences represent an important segment of high-value tourism, and Goa has significant potential in this market.
“We have seen steady growth, particularly in the Free Independent Traveller (FIT) segment. The Deccan Odyssey has three more journeys planned for the coming winter, with Goa as a key highlight and the final major destination on its itinerary,” he said.
Lotlikar said several guests were expected to extend their stay in Goa by a few nights, giving them an opportunity to explore its culture and heritage or experience its growing wellness offerings.
