Panaji: Goa government on Friday agreed to release Rs 5.23 crore funding in the form of support price for sugarcane growers in the State.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in presence of Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar and Cooperation Minister Govind Gawade assured to release the support price for the sugarcane growers by tomorrow (Saturday).

Gawade said that the state government will release Rs 5.23 crore for the sugarcane farmers in the form of support price.

He said that the farmers are offered support price of Rs 1,800 per tonnes for them. “The money would be deposited to the farmers by tomorrow,” he said.

Gawade said that the farmers had also sought reimbursement of harvesting price of Rs 600 per tonnes, which will be deposited later.

There are 800 sugar cane growers involved in the farming in the talukas of Sanguem and Quepem in South Goa.

The farmers had resorted to agitation on Wednesday demanding release of their support price and harvesting price money by the government. The agitation was withdrawn following assurance by Chief Minister to hold the meeting.

One of the farmer Rajendra Prabhudesai told reporters after attending the meeting with the chief minister that the farmers are happy with the solution provided by the government.

Goa produces around 30,000 metric tonnes of sugar cane annually which was processed at state run Sanjivani Sugar Factory till the year 2018.

The factory was shut down for maintenance in the year 2019 due to which the state government had sent the sugarcane for processing at private units in Karnataka.

Gawade told reporters that the issue of  resuming Sanjivani Sugar factory was not taken during the meeting with CM. “We will take up that issue subsequently,” he added.
