Porvorim: Goa Legislative Assembly on Monday witnessed chaotic scenes as Opposition members rushed to the well of the House reacting to the ‘congratulatory motion’ on Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The ruckus began on the floor of the House during first day of Budget session when BJP MLA Atanasio Monserratte moved a congratulatory motion congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for passing CAA.

The opposition benches led by Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat and Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai demanded that Speaker Rajesh Patnekar should not allow congratulatory motion on the subject, when they have given a notice for two and half hour long discussion on the same issue.

The united opposition had given notice to the Speaker for discussion on CAA and NRC.

As the Speaker allowed Monserratte to speak, the opposition benches stood up and rushed to the well.

“This is a murder of democracy. The government is trying to wind up the issue by moving congratulatory motion,” Sardesai said.

Even as ruckus continued, Speaker adjourned the session till 2.30 p.m.

The five day long budget session of Goa legislative assembly began on Monday.
