Porvorim: Goa government will involve anganwadi workers and teachers as foot soldiers to create awareness about novel coronavirus in the coastal state, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane told the House on Tuesday.

Responding to the calling attention motion on the floor of the House, Rane said that mass awareness about coronavirus would be created across the state.

He said that all the guidelines of World Health Organisation (WHO) and Union Health ministry are being adhered to by the state. Rane said Task Force led by state chief secretary has also been constituted.

“There will be training and awareness about the coronavirus. We will take anganwadi workers and teachers into confidence so that we can go to the grass root and any such kind of symptoms can be reported,” Rane said.

The opposition benches comprising of Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai and Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte urged that state government should take ‘extra precaution’ to ensure that the virus is not spread in Goa.

“We are already in touch with the education department. We will write to director of education so that the school principals and all the people are made aware about the disease,” he said.

While opposition benches raised concern about movement of people from Kerala into Goa through railways and buses, Rane said that the mechanism would also be worked out to ensure that there are no carriers entering the state.

“ We are strictly monitoring it (the situation). I agree that more needs to be done but for us also it is strange and new. Government of India has put this ahead of every situation,” he commented.

Rane said that he had personally gone to Delhi to demand for thermal scanner at Goa airport.

“We all need to be together on the issue. We will put appropriate mechanism how to handle people who come by bus or railway,” he said.

“People don’t know what coronavirus is, and that is why we need to penetrate this information which we will do using anganwadi and other mechanism,” he said.

Khaunte said that coronavirus is a serious issue. “Health minister should take free hand and ensure that every point of entry in Goa should be checked. Even from Kerala and other areas arrivals should be dealt with proper mechanism,” the Independent MLA said.

GFP President Sardesai said that the tourists arriving from China should be stopped at this moment.
