Panaji: While Health minister Vishwajit Rane faced ire of doctors after be reprimanded CMO Dr Rudresh Kuttikar in the casualty of GMC, the story narrated by retired government servant Maria Kamra is another side of the coin of this prestigious institution.

Kamra in an interview to a local news channel has narrated three different incidents in her life which has forced her to support Rane’s behaviour.

“You don’t get good treatment in GMC, if you don’t have a Godfather. Doctors, Nurses and even servants are not bothered,” she said.

Narrating her experience, Kamra said that in the year 2009, her husband was admitted to GMCH after his medical condition worsened.

“He was treated by Dr Edwin, who looked after him very well. But there was a day when Dr Edwin was on leave and another doctor (we are not mentioning the name) arrived at the ward. He looked at my husband and asked whose patient is he. When he was told that the patient is that of Dr Edwin, he refused to treat him,” she alleged.

Kamra alleged that soon after that she lost her husband. It was a time when her children were young and she had to raise them one her own.

Nine years later, in the year 2018, Kamra was detected with Breast Cancer. She stated that she preferred to take treatment from a private doctor as she had lost faith in the GMCH.
“When I was cured, being a government servant, I presented my Bills for reimbursement,” she said.

She was refused the reimbursement and till now she is fighting for it.

In the latest case, Kamra recalls how her son met with an accident while returning from a party. “He was made to wait on a wheelchair outside casualty for three hours. When I was doctor why he was kept that way bleeding, the doctor told me that he has consumed alcohol,” she said.

Kamra questioned the act of the doctor stating “it was the duty of doctor to treat the patient and not to get unnecessarily worried whether he is drunk or not.”
Speaking about the recent incident, Kamra said “the way Rane spoke was different but it is required that someone should strictly act against the erring doctors.”
