World Disability Day was celebrated at Manipal Hospital, Dona Paula

Panaji: The World Disability Day was celebrated by hosting a medical camp and other activities at the Manipal Hospital, Dona Paula Goa on Sunday in association with DRAG, Rotary Club Panaji Mid-Town and IMA Bicholim.

District Collector Ajit Roy lighted the lamp in the presence of Mr Manish Trivedi, Head of Manipal Hospital, Goa, Dr Shekhar Salkar, Avelino de Sa of Disability Rights Association of Goa.

Mr Kenkre from Rotary Club of Panaji Mid Town , Dr Deep Bhandare and Dr Medha Salkar president IMA Bicholim were also present on the occasion. Various tests were conducted on 35 people at the medical camp by a team of Manipal Hospitals for  members of DRAG and their care takers.

Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Deep  Bhandari, Dr Shekhar Salkar and Dr Medha Salkar evaluated the person with disability.

Total10 person were seen to have high blood sugar who were guided to do further test to confirm diabetes. Around five persons with disability  could be helped with surgeries which could be done on DDSSY government scheme at Manipal Hospital free of charge.

Doctors have assured to help them with future course of action with the help of Manipal Hospital.

Goa Blind Cricket Team which recently participated in Nagesh Trophy National Blind Cricket Tournament in Delhi was felicitated by North Goa Collector Ajit Roy.

They were given certificates of appreciation.

Under Collector’s guidence a team from CEO, Goa made demo presentations of EVM and VVPAT for Persons with disability with emphasis on visually impaired youth with demo of voting by Brail reading for visually impaired persons.

Mr. Roy spoke of efforts being made by government towards inclusion and accessibility at different levels by the State government to empower Mr. Trivedi and Dr. Salkar assured to continue to help Persons with disability in their medical needs.

Dr Bhandari made a presentation about how with his intervention in Association with Rotary Club Panaji Mid Town and Manipal Hospitals many orthopedic children with Disability have been treated over the years to live their productive and active life and even go back to activities like sports.

Mr. Avelino de Sa thanked Manipal Hospital and Rotary Club for their initiative to celebrate World Disability Day and hoped it will be an annual feature here onwards. Dr medha salkar assured all help from IMA Bicholim branch for persons with disabilities.

Mr Mone president and Mr Kenkre chairman of community services of rotary mid town assured all help to persons with disabilities.  Dr Stacie compered the function and proposed vote of thanks.

Mr Roy personally helped persons with impaired vision to understand the procedure of voting on EVM with brail reading facility.
