Panaji: Two tourists were killed after a tanker truck allegedly driven in a rash and negligent manner, crossed into the opposite lane and crashed into their car on the NH-66 near Bambolim.
The accident occurred when the tanker was proceeding from Bambolim towards Panaji on Tuesday morning. On reaching the Bambolim slope, the driver, identified as Rahul Sarwade (37), allegedly lost control of the vehicle, crossed the solid divider, and entered the opposite carriageway meant for vehicles heading from Panaji to Bambolim, a police official said.
The tanker then rammed into an oncoming car and overturned, crossing the service road on the opposite side, the official said.
The occupants of the car — driver Yogender Singh (42) of Nangloi, West Delhi, and co-driver Ankit Kumar (34) of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh — died on the spot, he added.
Police have arrested driver of the tanker for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 and taken into custody.
