Panaji: Traffic Police have initiated inquiry into the controversial challan in which a person is fined for not wearing helmet while driving a car. Traffic Sentinel had clicked the picture and sent it to the department.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dharmesh Angle said that the inquiry has been initiated in connection with the mistake. “I have seen the challan which is circulated on social media. I have ordered inquiry into it,” he said.

Angle said that the Traffic Sentinel is APP based service and there is a possibility of human error. “May be somebody has overlooked at it,” he said.

Interestingly, the traffic sentinel who has shot the picture is seen on a bike. When asked whether the Sentinel would be fined for clicking picture while on bike, Angle said “whether bike is stationary or moving is not understood. Whether rider or pillion has clicked. There is benefit of doubt.”

“We have issued instructions that sentinel would be warned. If we find this then we would be constrained to remove them from the scheme,” he said.

Angle said that there has been misunderstanding that they are clicking pictures to make money.

“This is social responsibility, somebody has to take it up. you never did anything for your safety, now if someone is doing it then there should not be objections. When there were fatalities traffic police were blamed.

Rather than shouting in the name of sentinel, now you should appreciate that the enforcement is happening,” he said.

ATTACK ON TRAFFIC SENTINELS

“We are going to take strict action. Whether he is sentinel or not a sentinel, nobody has got a right to do this. If you have anything against any sentinel or any person, come to my office or go to any inspector’s office and protest there. You are free to do that. You cannot go and confront somebody. We will not tolerate unruly behaviour.”

Vasco SDPO Vasco has taken clear cut action.
