The locals who have released video of their misery on social media to get the attention of authorities have said that they are in distress due to increasing water levels.

70-year-old Maonhar Bhomkar living at this Island has said that the traditional bandhs from nearby areas has breached due to which the water has rushed in the villages and has even entered the homes.

“There is flood everywhere. The bandhs have breached and water is gushing from all the sides on the Island. For like four days we are stranded,” he said.

Diwar Island is situated near Panaji across River Mandovi and is connected to mainstream through ferry boat service. As the ferry boat wharfs have gone underwater, the State River Navigation Department has suspended ferry service on few of the routes including Diwar.

In the video released, Bhomkar said that people are not able to move out of their homes due to which they are also missing their work. “Paddy fields will be completely destroyed as the water has refused to flow out and rains are still continuing,” he said.

State Water Resources Department Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues said that the government is making all its efforts to help out those who are stranded in floods. “We will provide assistance also to the people from Diwar Island,” he said.
