Margao: The Congress Party celebrated Goa Liberation Day at Lohia Maidan, Margao. Rich floral tributes were paid to the martyrs of the freedom struggle at the Martyrs Memorial and the statue of Ram Manohar Lohia.
Congress leader Savio Coutinho, in his address, took strong exception to the statement of Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, who said that 74 people would not have been martyrs if Liberation had not been delayed by 14 years by the Congress Party and Jawaharlal Nehru. Coutinho criticized the Chief Minister for trying to mislead Goans by propagating falsehoods.
Coutinho said that it was due to the Congress government and then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru that Goa got Liberation from Portuguese rule. “Dr. Pramod Sawant, who we believe has sufficient knowledge of the history behind Goa’s liberation, is deplorably trying to misguide people,” he added.
He further emphasized that the present dictatorial governance that Goans are subjected to must be put to an end at the earliest, and urged people to come forward for another movement.
