Panaji: Rain water harvesting and conservation would be an integral part of the future planning in Goa for which adequate amendments would be brought in the existing laws, State Water Resources Department Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues said.

Rodrigues has said that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will be calling for  a meeting of all the departments to draw a plan on the rain water harvesting and its conservation in rural and urban areas.

State government’s move comes a week after capital city of Panaji along with areas in Tiswadi and Ponda talukas witnessed seven-day-long water scarcity due to busting of water pipeline. The State witnessed scarcity between August 15 to August 20.

“Rain water harvesting has been a priority for State government. We are trying to amend the existing laws to ensure that rain water harvesting and its conservation is mandatory for the dwellings before they are granted licences,” Rodrigues said.

He said that Town and Country Planning and Goa Panchayati Raj Acts would be amended to embed this provision making it mandatory to have rain water harvesting.
