Manipal Hospitals becomes the first hospital in Goa to launch a dedicated Sports medical team

Goa, 22nd August 2021: Manipal Hospitals, Goa, has announced the launch of the Sports Medical Team at a press conference held today. The hospital has also partnered with Goa Football Association (GFA) to provide free basic life support training for players associated with the GFA and the GFDC. Mr. Churchill Alemao, President – Goa Football Association and MLA – Benaulim, graced the conference as the Chief Guest. The conference also saw the presence of Mr. Brahmanand Sagoon Kamat Sankhwalkar, Chairman – Goa Football Development Council (GFDC) and former Indian football team captain, Mr. Jovito Lopes, General Secretary – Goa Football Association, Mr. Manish Trivedi, Hospital Director, Manipal Hospitals – Goa, Dr. Shekar Salkar, Head – Oncology department, Manipal Hospitals – Goa and Dr. Aditya Gosawi, Medical Superintendent, Manipal Hospitals, Goa.

The Sports Medical team comprising of Dr. Deepchand Bhandare, Senior Consultant – Orthopaedics, Dr. Rohan R Dessai, Consultant – Hip and Knee Replacement Surgeon, and Dr. Sunny Kamat, Consultant – Spine Orthopaedic Surgeon was present at the event. The event was also graced by Mr. Saghir Siddiqui, Regional COO, KMC Hospital – Mangalore, Dr. Anand Venugopal – Regional Chief of Clinical Services, Manipal Hospitals – Goa, and KMC Hospital – Mangalore, and Mr. Surendra Prasad, Marketing Head, KMC Hospital – Mangalore.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Churchill Alemao, said, “The love for sports runs in every Goan citizen and I am really happy to see Manipal Hospitals launch the first dedicated sports medicine team in Goa. This will help educate all sportspeople and enthusiasts on sports-related injuries. Goa Football Association is very elated to be partnering with the hospital to provide education and free basic life support training for players associated with the GFA and the GFDC.”

Speaking about the training program, Dr. Deepchand Bhandare said, “These sessions will consist of theory and practical aspects and will be conducted by our expert team of doctors who are a part of the Intensive Care Unit at Manipal Hospitals, Goa. We are also one of the few hospitals in Goa to have a dedicated sports medicine team to provide treatment and services to injuries related to sports. We are equipped to offer Pre-Tournament Screening, Prevention of Injury, Injury Management, Sports Rehabilitation, and Nutrition programs.”
Mr. Manish Trivedi said, “Goa is one of the leading states in India when it comes to sports. Among all the sports, football garners a lot of attention and can be called the leader of sports in Goa. It is an immense pleasure to have partnered with the GFA to provide free basic life support training for players associated with the GFA and the GFDC. We will be conducting these training sessions every alternate Sunday from 9 am to 12 noon at the hospital.”

“Having proper education and knowledge about injuries is an important thing for a sportsperson. This will help in better management of injuries which will, in turn, help in having a long and extended career. I am really happy that Manipal Hospitals is the first hospital in Goa to take up such an initiative to make sure that the athletes are provided with quality care, treatment, and education related to sports injuries” Mr. Saghir Siddiqui said.

Keeping in mind the COVID-19 safety protocols, the hospital will be limiting the number of participants per session to 15 members.
