A group of about 20 individuals cutting across party lines, from across the length and breadth of Goa who have got together under the banner of Goem Against Corruption (GAC) including social activists, lawyers, teachers and politicians will knock on the doors of the Supreme Court to challenge the merger of 2/3 of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) with the legislative wing of the BJP.

Goem Against Corruption to challenge merger of 2/3 Congress CLP with BJP in SC
According to North Goa-based social activist Cecille Rodrigues, a spokesperson for the GAC, “We are challenging the interpretation of the Anti Defection Act before the SC. The way the anti defection act is being interpreted by the ruling party in various states is constitutionally incorrect. This was never the intention and spirit of the the anti defection act,” Rodrigues explained, refusing to share further information at this stage.
Goans with different political affiliations including some from the ruling BJP party have joined the GAC, says Rodrigues.
‘Several hundred BJP workers across Goa are unhappy with the latest development in the party. Today they have to bow before the very people they campaigned against, while their own leaders who have been with the party for nearly 20-25 years are confined to the corner,” says Adv Austin Rebello from Velim, one of the petitioners.
Rebello adds that political workers from the BJP, Congress, MGP, GSM, Shiv Sena and the Goa Forward Party have come together under the Goem Against Corruption banner to fight this “buying” and “inducement” of MLAs in the State.
“The ruling party, irrespective of whether its Congress or BJP cannot take us Goans for a ride any more. We are challenging the illegal merger in the courts. If we do not get justice in the court, we will take to the streets. Goem Against Corruption will have a unit in every constituency very soon. This is going to be a mass movement. Today we learnt that an upright officer like Iva Fernandes of the FDA was shunted out and stripped of her powers for speaking up against corrupt, illegal and incorrect activity. This cannot go on anymore,” said Rodrigues.
