Panaji: Quraishi’s Meat Traders Association of Goa (QMTAG), the apex body of the beef traders in the State, today claimed that the supply of the beef has been cut down to almost half of the actual market requirement, forcing the tourism industry to go through raw food supply crisis.
“The actual requirement of beef in Goa is to the tune of 20-25 tonnes per day, which can be supplied only if Goa Meat Complex Limited starts its operations,” QMTAG President Manna Bepari told a press conference today.
“The traders import only 10-12 tonnes of beef every day from Karnataka due to logistical issues. That does not fulfill the market requirements, forcing us to shut our shops by afternoon,” he said.
Bepari said that the tourism industry needs beef as a part of their regular raw material for restaurant, but the supplies dry out in the morning itself.
He said that GMCL has been out of order since October last year, and attempts to get it back functional bear no fruits.
The traders allege that the NGOs who are working in the field of cow protection are unnecessarily harassing them, though the animals are purchased with all proper certification including anti-mortem formalities.
