Issue of declaring animals as vermin needs to be taken seriously: Vijai Sardesai

Panaji: Goa Forward Party on Friday appealed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to put sense in BJP-led Goa government and ensure that upcoming Zilla Panchayat elections are postponed indefinitely in the wake of Coronavirus outbreak.

GFP President Vijai Sardesai, in a statement released here, has demanded the postponement of Zilla Panchayat election as an initiative of ‘social distancing’ which has been one of the preventions to curb the spread of the virus.

Sardesai, who is ex-deputy chief minister, said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed the people of ‘Janata Curfew’ on Sunday, which is a welcome step.

“Janata Curfew is nothing but social distancing. It is considered as the only way to tackle this global pandemic of Coronavirus,” he said.

“I feel that Prime Minister has said that social distancing is one of the important step to curb this virus,” Sardesai said.

The GFP said that senior citizens are most vulnerable for this virus. “Goa’s eleven percent population is of senior citizens. Chief minister through these elections is making this population vulnerable,” he said.

Sardesai said that Goa government by posteponing the ZP elections by mere two days has made Janata Curfew into an event.

“If you go by Chief minister’s press conference, he seems to be taking Janata curfew casually. It is not a break for one day. Janata Curfew is done to prepare the people that more such things might come up in future,” he said.

Sardesai said that PM’s announcement has been made into farce by state government. “CM is not only putting life of people into danger but also his life,” he said.
