Four persons from Maharashtra arrested by Pernem police for illegal sand transportation

Panaji: Goa Police on Friday arrested for four persons from neighbouring Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra for illegal transportation of sand.

Pernem police have arrested four persons on Friday morning while they were transporting the sand from Goa into Maharashtra, on the National Highway, without any permission, the spokesman said.

The accused —  Gurunath Gawde (32), Sudarshan Varak (35), Sanjay Varak (27) and Anant Parab (32), — all hailing from Kudal town of Sindhudurg district were arrested by Pernem police. Police have also attached four trucks, which were used to transport the sand.

Police spokesman said that the accused committed theft of the sand from the river without any lease or licence from the competent authority and transported it in clandestine manner for personal gain.

He said that all the accused were booked under different sections of Indian Penal Code and Mines and Mineral Development and Regulation Act, 1957.
