Panaji: The Congress party in Goa on Tuesday inducted former State Minister Avertano Furtado in its fold, who is likely to contest from Navelim constituency for upcoming State Legislative Assembly election.
The party had received setback in Navelim Assembly constituency when MLA Luizinho Faleiro had resigned from the primary membership of the party and the post to join Trinamool Congress Party.
He was inducted in the party in presence of All India Congress Committee Goa Desk Incharge Dinesh Gundu Rao, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar, Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat and others.
Furtado, who held portfolio including Fisheries in Manohar Parrikar cabinet between 2012 till 2017, joined Congress party. He was Independent MLA when he had supported BJP led government.
Furtado was defeated by Faleiro in Navelim during 2017 Assembly election.
After his induction, Furtado said that he always wanted to join Congress and work for the party in Navelim constituency but had found Faleiro as a stumbling block.
“After I lost 2017 election, I had decided that I will never contest any election. But my voters kept on urging to me that I should contest again,” he said adding that his intentions to get into the electoral fray got the boost when Faleiro resigned as MLA.
