Goa Forward Vice President Adv Ashma said that during the recently concluded assembly session, the Goa forward Party President Shri Vijai Sardesai had raised the grievances of citizens who have gone before the courts to seek justice. Adv Ashma said that Litigants claim that dates for hearings are given after a gap of more than a month for cases. Thus the delay is unacceptable especially when the cases relate to crimes against women and senior citizens.
It was revealed under LAQ that 57283 cases are pending in various courts across Goa. When asked what the government is doing to speed up the cases in courts, the minister’s response was vague as though the delay was part of the process. Nowhere did he mention that vacancies in the post of judges is one of the cause for the large number of cases pending before the courts said Goa Forward Vice President Adv Ashma
The reality was revealed in a reply to a Lok Sabha parliamentary question dated 29/7/22, where the Central Minister for Law stated that 10 out of the 50 sanction posts of judges in Goa are vacant. These vacancies constitute 20% of the total number of judges in Goa. Goa’s Law Minister thus tried to mislead the house instead of taking responsibility for the failure to appoint the remaining 20% of judges said Adv Ashma.
The Goa Forward Party demands that the 10 posts of judges be filled within the next 6 months and sufficient infrastructure be provided to setup the 10 courts in order to release some burden of cases on the existing judges and provide for speedy justice to Goans
