Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai visits Sonsodo, attempts on to douse fire

Margao: The firefighters and civic authorities are engaged in dousing flames at State’s one of the oldest garbage dump in South Goa which has caught fire since last two days, chief minister Pramod Sawant said.

Sawant told reporters on Wednesday that he is taking stock of the situation at Sonsodo Garbage Dump near Margao town in South Goa which has caught fire since last two days.

“Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai is already at the spot and I am in constant touch with him. I am also getting four hourly update from Director of Fire and Emergency Ashok Menon,” the Chief Minister said.

The Portuguese-era garbage dump is located on the outskirt of Margao town. The garbage caught fire two days back and since then has not come under control.

Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Siddhivinayak Naik said that fire tenders are constantly working to douse the fire. “We are also at the spot. The fire has not come under control,” he said.

State’s Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai who rushed to the site has ordered Margao Municipal council to ensure that damage from the fire is controlled. The continuos fire has been resulting in the smoke which has filled the air around the garbage dump.
