Panaji: Goa police have arrested a couple for allegedly killing a five-year-old girl from their neighbourhood and later burying her body in their backyard.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Ponda) Shivram Vaigankar told reporters that Babasaheb Alar (52) and his wife Pooja were arrested by Ponda police on Thursday after they confessed to the crime.
The body of the five-year-old girl was found buried in their backyard and was recovered on Thursday night by Ponda police, he said.
Vaigankar stated that the couple was childless and had been advised by a person practicing black magic to sacrifice a child to end their woes.
The parents of the child, who lived in the neighbourhood of the accused, had reported her missing on Wednesday.
During the investigation, police reviewed CCTV footage from the area, which showed the girl entering the accused’s house but not returning.
Upon interrogation, the couple confessed to killing the girl and later led the police to the burial site, he said.
The accused have been booked for murder and destruction of evidence, he added.
