Panaji: The Trinamool Congress party has criticized Goa government its decision to amend the flagship Ladli Laxmi scheme restricting its benefit only to the girls for marriage purpose.

The scheme introduced by then Manohar Parrikar-led government had covered benefits for marriage or education or business purpose for every girl child in the state.

TMC Goa spokesman Avita Bandodkar on Monday said that the state government has restricted the benefit of this scheme only for marriage purpose as if “marriage is the end of everything.”

She said that the benefit of the scheme should be given to girls who want to study further or start their own business.

The state government provides Rs one lakh per beneficiary.

Bandodkar said that the scheme can help women be self dependent but it has been restricted only for the purpose of marriage, thereby ridiculing the purpose for which it was introduced.

When contacted, Director of Women and Child Welfare department Deepali Naik said that the scheme has been amended by the State government.

She said that her department is only the implementing agency while policy decisions are taken by the state government.
