Vasco: Swimming coach Surajit Ganguly who has been arrested for raping a minor swimmer was brought to Goa during mid-night of Saturday by State police from New Delhi, where he was arrested.

Ganguly who was on the run since the case was filed against him was arrested on Friday at Kashmiri Gate in New Delhi.

The accused was brought to Goa by a flight by State police, which arrived during mid-night here. Police have already taken three-day-long transit remand for the accused.

A senior police official said that the accused would be produced before local court later during the day today (Sunday) for obtaining the remand.

Earlier on Saturday, Goa police had produced the accused before Tis Hajari Court in New Delhi to get the transit remand.

On Friday,  Superintendent of Police (North) Utkrisht Prasoon had said that the accused who was on the run and travelling through different states was apprehended in New Delhi’s Kashmere gate area on Friday.

Goa police had sent teams to different locations to nab the accused, who has been on the run since the time case of rape, molestation, threatening and trespass was filed by minor’s father.

Prasoon had said that the father of the girl had approached Rishra Police Station in Hoogly district of West Bengal with the complaint against the  swimming coach.

The complaint had mentioned that the incident had happened at Mapusa in Goa. “After the complaint, North Goa District Police immediately sprung into action and Hoogly Police Station was contacted regarding the matter,” the SP had said.

The complaint was obtained from West Bengal via e-mail and FIR was immediately registered in the matter.
