Surla: Vaccine advocacy, faith-building, and community mobilisation were key elements in making sure that a remote and sleepy hamlet of Sattari taluka nested in the arms of western ghats to get vaccinated to its almost entire adult population for the first dose against Covid-19.
Surla village It is situated 50 km away from Taluka headquarter Valpoi and 76km away from district headquarter Panaji
As per the local Panch member Suryakant Gawas, almost every eligible villager have taken the shot and very few who are out of the village due to work are remaining. ” We have managed to cover the entire population residing in this village but few villagers are working in other cities who were unable to come for vaccination, those left out villagers are very few and even they will take vaccine wherever they are residing. In April during the first Tika Utsav, our villagers had taken dose in our panchayat, the remaining one took it today. I am very much happy and thankful to the Government of Goa and especially Health Minister Vishwajit Rane and Community Health Centre Valpoi for their efforts to vaccinate our villagers.
Incharge of CHC Valpoi Dr Shyam Kankonkar said our team visited houses of villagers who were unable to come to the session site and vaccinated them, Non-availability of the internet in the village was another hurdle as it was not possible to register villagers on the Cowin platform for vaccination. The session carried out here was offline mode. Before the first Tika Utsav, we had vaccinated many villagers. Today we vaccinated 218 villagers.”
“A sustained awareness campaign by health workers accompanied by Panch member Suryakant Gawas ensured the hamlet achieve its target”
