This second wave is having many more patients of covid infection than first wave and the good news is many patients are having very good recovery rate. So don’t get panic and just continue following all SOP related.
Many a times patients complain of loss of taste, Loss of smell, lot of weakness,
Continuous cough, continuous fever , on and off breathlesness even after 10 to 14 days of post covid infection.
In this blog I’ll try to give some important information and treatment regarding it.
1) LOSS OF TASTE AND LOSS OF SMELL:
It’s very annoying that when you eat you can’t feel the taste in fact it just make you avoid the best of food which is served. Generally when you smell/taste the food your digestive secretions gets on the way, remember when you feel aroma food getting cooked which makes you to go to kitchen first and than to dinning room with mouth pumping saliva!!!.
Here I’ll share you the reason of loss of smell / taste during or post covid infection. The virus affects and block and the smell receptors (Olfactory receptors)  and taste receptors (  Gustatory receptors) situated in nose and on tongue respectively, which results in loss of smell and taste. Generally it remain for about 1 week but in some cases it’s seen even after 14 days of post covid infection and takes 1 month for complete recovery.
Treatment:
There is no specific treatment but we can try therapy called olfactory training in which we ask patients to smell typical know fragrances like Eucalyptus, Rose, clove oil etc which can speed up recovery. Some Ayurveda remedies like doing regular nose wash with warm water, taking stream twice or thrice a day, or doing Nasya under supervision of expert doctor can help you for faster recovery.  As swelling at receptors is reduce it helps in identifying the smell
2) Persistent cough post covid infection:
Cough is a reflex of body to throw out the irritants present in wind pipe. It maybe sputum or any foreign particles
Sometimes post covid infection it may last for some months. Reason maybe coz of
a) debris (phlegm) present in lungs  which will give rise to wet cough and
b) Increase sensitivity of air way receptors which gives rise to dry cough
c) Bronchitis: that is swelling of air way
Treatment:Breathing exercises (Pranayam) play important role here but remember that if after some time of exercise if you get cough better to stop and continue after a gap of 1 hour.
In dry cough you can try turmeric and salt warm water gargling and chewing candy sugar and ginger
In wet cough you can take clove and honey.
In bronchitis you can try taking steam with eucalyptus oil. Experts opinion is required in some stages
3) Post covid fatigue , tiredness and muscular pain.
In any general disease when we are in recovery stage we tend to get symptoms like weakness, excessive sleep, pain in joints, body ache, dizziness etc same things are seen in post covid infection. Reason is that when virus infect our body the defense system of our body gets activated and release a chemical called Cytokines. This Cytokines creates swelling and inflammation in different parts of our body and not just in lungs and this creates general weakness, body ache etc. Generally post infection these symptoms are present for 1 to 2 week, but in some patients it may last for months.
Treatment:
a) Bed rest: this means you have to just lie down on bed , do nothing and get up from bed to eat and to get fresh. Many patients in general conditions also when are advised rest, continue to watch TV, be on mobile playing games or talking to friends or relatives. This is absolutely contraindicated when your doctor advice you bed rest
b) Adequate sleep: 8 hours of sleep is required for healthy life not to forget I am speaking of night sleep. But in general sickness we need to increase this time. As sleep is a state when our body does repairing which is need of time in such situation. So night and day time sleep is recommended as long as possible.
c) Healthy diet :
Home made food is most important as it’s prepared using best of spices, oils and importantly prepared in hygienic conditions. Not to forget the the “tadkaa” of love by our beloved when they cook for you!
d)Fluid and Electrolytes : generally we use OTC electrolytes satchets but the home made electrolytes are more better than above . Simple use of lemon juice with salt and candy sugar is ideal home made electrolyte. Adding to this list is tender coconut water or ripped coconut water, local seasonal fruit juices are recommended for speedy recovery.
e) Light exercise.:
Initially start with walking for short distance. The amount of distance may vary from person to person. In general do not make your body get tired and sweat. So choose distance as per your convince. Pranayam and yogasana should be done in this limit.
f) Meditation: this is the most important part of recovery. Concentrating on one particular thought and stabilising mind on it is most important. If performed with Shavaasan the results are marvelous. It’s a game changing in post covid infection as mental trauma is very serious in this pandemic situation. Try it…. M sure you will get wonderful results.
4)Post covid fever:
Many people complain about this in post covid infection. Reason is again as explained previously, our body defense system and release of Cytokines which trigger thermostat in brain and maintain body temperature which takes time to get to normal range this is called thermostat disregulation. This is the reason for low grade fever in post covid infection. Generally 99 to 99.5 °F is what you see as low temperature fever.
Treatment: first of all stop unnecessary charting of temperature, which will relax your body and importantly mind. Avoid physical exertion. If your body temperature is around 100°F consult your family physician and if advised repeat blood investigation for any other infection as body is prone for such infection because of low immunity
5) Post covid Neuropsychiatric symptoms:
Anxiety, Insomnia, Fear of loneliness
Fear of reinfection, etc
Treatment: meditation if added with shavaasan as told earlier is very helpful.
After 14 days of isolation start playing indoor games like Ludo, carrom, chess, etc which doesn’t give you exertion. Share time with your beloved ones so as to make home environment friendly and free. If still these symptoms persist I’ll advice you to consultant a psychiatrician.
6) Digestive system: In this many patients complain of Diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite, indigestion. Sometimes it maybe coz of pancreatitis which need to be treated by expert physician.
Treatment:
Take health diet, fresh green leafy vegetables, fruit, avoid oily food, use masala in adequate amount, avoid fermented food and eat food within 6 hrs of cocking. Good chewing of food is also important which leads to proper digestion. Drink water in adequate amount to keep it well hydrated. Drink water sip by sip and allow saliva by holding water for few seconds in your mouth before swallowing it.
7) Post covid warning signs:
In some cases post recovery we may hear that even after good recovery some people died all of sudden. Now to find pre symptoms of this following are some warning signs;
Breathlesness chest pain, palpitations, sudden weakness of hands and / or legs.
Reason for this are the blood clots which are formed in the lungs and if they block the airways it’s call pulmonary embolism, if the clot gets blocks in coronary artery it may lead to heart attack, if gets embedded in brain it will cause brain stroke
Treatment:
This is an emergency situation. Please try to avoid any movement of your body, try to keep it as stable as possible and without wasting time shift the patient to hospital ASAP!!!

Post covid infection recovery takes some months but if you follow above instructions than definitely the time period will get shorter.
