Panaji: Police today booked two brothers for raping their niece for over ten years, since she was 13-year-old.

Porvorim Police Inspector Paresh Naik said that both the accused are in their 40s, and has been accused of raping their niece, who is currently 23-year-old.

The case was filed under section 376 (rape) and 355 (molestation) against both the accused. They are also booked under section 8 (2) of Goa Children’s Act.

As per the complaint filed with Porvorim police, the girl has claimed that she was being raped by her uncles since she was 13 year old.

She has said that the sexual abuse continued till recently when she decided to file a formal police complaint.

Naik said that the police are conducting investigation in the offence.

While the victim had filed formal complaint with the police four days back, the investigating officer had kept it on hold. The case was finally registered after Goa-based NGO Hope Foundation raised the issue before senior police officers.

“We want to know why Porvorim police kept the case pending without investigation for four days. Rape is a serious matter which was dealt with such lethargy,” said Inacio Pereira, Director, Hope Foundation.

He said that the NGO had taken up the case after victim approached them for justice.
