Panaji: Hours after Chief minister Pramod Sawant ruled out community transmission of COVID-19, Ponda police station reported 21 cases of infection including the Inspector attached to it.

Sawant on Wednesday had retracted his statement that there was community transmission of the disease.

Even as Chief Minister continued in denial mode, Ponda Police Station saw sudden spurt in the cases.

Sources confirmed that the first transmission to the Police Station was carried from Sankhalim, which is turning to be the next hotspot for covid in the state.

Senior officers including Police Inspector has been admitted to covidcare centre after testing positive for the infection.

Chief minister’s statement that it is not passed through air is also attracting criticism as the disease is not air borne but is carried through droplets.

The increasing impact of the virus on police department has become a cause of concerned. Earlier this week, a section in Police Headquaters was shut down after two constables working in it were tested positive.

Incidently, both the constables had got the infection from Sankhalim.
