Margao:  That the No Confidence filed by the 15 councillors is the fallout of the swearing by councillors at Zambaulim temple, is no longer a secret at all. What is disturbing is that our leaders are unnecessarily dragging the God’s in their dubious schemes, former Chairperson of MMC Mr. Savio Coutinho said.

“I have been part of the Council for nearly 20 years as councillor, with 2 terms as the Chairperson. So also several Chairperson’s have been elected and removed during the last several decades. But not once did we have to swear on the sacred coconut, either to seek support or to withdraw support “, Mr. Coutinho lamented

The mockery of God displayed by our state representative’s is sadly being introduced in the Margao Municipal Council politics; and we very strongly condemn this, Mr. Coutinho said.

Mr. Coutinho further, reacting to the claim of MMC councillor Mr. Mahesh Amonkar, that it was he(Mahesh) who had taken the 15 councillors to Zambaulim, and not the Margao MLA Digamber Kamat; Mr. Coutinho said that it is a cover for the state leaders after they received the flak from all quarters. In the same breath Mr. Coutinho however expressed happiness that the event of the swearing before Zambaulim Temple was officially confirmed as true. “If councillor Mahesh Amonkar truly has so much command over the 15 councillors, then he should be the Chairperson candidate instead of any other”, Mr. Coutinho stated sarcastically.

It appears that the Municipal act needs to be amended, as far as section 56 is concerned. The term “No Confidence”, needs to be redefined. How can councillors loose confidence in an elected Chairperson when the Chairperson is yet to assume his duties, and do something wrong? Mr. Coutinho, Convener of Shadow Council for Margao questions.

The sequence of the councillors meeting’s with the Hon’ble Chief Minister and Margao MLA Digamber Kamat, and the resultant voting against their official candidate is a clear indication that the councillors have expressed their genuine choice, and didn’t bow down to pressure, and this needs to be accepted and digested well by our leaders, Mr. Coutinho thundered.

The fresh No Confidence is purely a result of desperate pressure, and may go through as it is not through secret ballot. But what happens during the subsequent election for a new Chairperson, which will again be under secret ballot?, Mr. Coutinho questioned. Will the councillors again have to swear on the sacred coconut at some religious place?, he wondered.

The people of Margao, and Goa, definitely didn’t expect that our leaders can go to such levels to attain power, Mr. Coutinho concludes.
